IPAF International Powered Access Federation

The IPAF training programme for platform operators was developed by leading industry professionals. It is certified by TÜV as conforming to the international standard ISO 18878 Mobile elevating work platforms – Operator (driver) training. More than 100,000 operators are trained each year through a worldwide network of over 600 training centres. Successful trainees receive a PAL Card (Powered Access Licence), a safety guide, a log book and a certificate.

Training and competence

Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWP) operators should have attended a recognised operator training course and received a certificate, card or ‘licence’, listing the categories of MEWP the bearer is trained to operate. The expiry date of the training licence or card should be checked. In addition to formal training for the type of MEWP, operators should have familiarisation training on the controls and operation of the specific make and model of MEWP they are using.

1 full day with Lancaster Training Services, including theory & practical assessments.

Option 2

Theory is completed via e-learning, from home (or work) followed by half a day with Lancaster Training Services to complete the practical assessments.

The online training course is administered on the IPAF e-learning platform which requires delegates to use a device that has camera capabilities in line with IPAF facial recognition software. Most mainstream smartphones, tablets & laptops will work in conjunction with the e-learning platform.

MEWPS for Managers

This is an online e-learning course that will take 4-6 hours to complete, and is designed to instruct supervisors and managers on how to prepare for an safely co-ordinate various types of MEWPs within their control.

This course is ideal for employers, project managers, foremen and supervisors working in a broad range of industries such as construction, facilities management, retail, airports and arboriculture.

Also anyone who is responsible for planning and overseeing the use of MEWPs on their job site.

  • Introduction including pre-course theory test, IPAF and PAL card overview
  •  Understanding the different machine classifications i.e. 1a, 1b, 3a, 3b, MC, TPI and IAD
  •  Awareness of the different types of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs)
  •  Examine the history of MEWPs and the sustainability of machine for tasks
  •  Understanding requirements for pre-use checks and daily maintenance prior to work commencing
  •  Understanding of regulations relating to MEWP usage
  •  Brief view of machines to understand some of the hazards (optional)
  •  Understanding the delivery of machines and familiarisation process on site

The theory learning finishes with delegates completing a short multiple choice exam.

This online training course is administered on the IPAF eLearning platform which requires delegates to use a device that has camera capabilities in line with IPAF facial recognition software. Most mainstream smart phones, tablets and laptops will work in conjunction with the eLearning platform.
